"Top-down Zelda meets Bloodborne": action RPG Withering Realms is out now in early access, should you fancy riding the shoulders of a horrible doll
Withering Rooms was an unexpectedly devious and absorbing slice of dollhouse action-RPG horror. As such, I've been looking forward to Withering Realms, the standalone sort-of-sequel, which launches in early access today. The new game takes place in the 1920s, following the 'premature' end of World War 1 thanks to an occult catastrophe. You play a ghost child, clinging to the shoulders of a living marionette. The marionette is a real fright, its body a coatful of springs and hinges, its face a one-eyed rictus: it reminds me of certain scenes from Phil Tippett's stop motion masterpiece Mad God and also, of Curly from Mouthwashing . You wouldn't accept if that thing offered you a piggyback. But it is pretty handy in a fight. Read more

Brazilian Shmup 'Metal Canary' Is Headed To The Nintendo Wii
Wii port to debut at Canal 3 Expo. Dust off your nunchuck and hide the fine china, because the Nintendo Wii is getting a brand new game. Following its previous appearance on Sega Dreamcast, Metal Canary is now preparing to debut on Nintendo's seventh-gen supernova. Developed by Brazilian homebrew studio NaiAdventure , Metal Canary is a vertically-scrolling shmup that sees a meagre squadron of human pilots fight to save the planet from a global AI gone rogue. In typically dystopian fashion, OMNICORE was tasked with taking control of Earth's strategic decision-making, but naturally came to the conclusion that humanity was the problem. Understandable, to be honest. Now, with the world at the behest of the machines, it is up to the Metal Canaries to take to the skies and wipe the planet of OMNICORE's control. In the dungeons, you fight various monsters and beasties and are then offered upgrades to your combat build or a handful of relics you must fit in your bag. In the shop, you figure out how to get the best price for these items. And then you spend that money on upgrades that help you to dungeon delve better and start all over again. All this time, you will be thinking about multipliers. Read more
