Elanor Moss – The Knife, the Needle
Elanor Moss The Knife, the Needle The British singer-songwriter finds warmth in pastoral plucking and a rich wash of brass and strings The Knife, The Needle by Elanor Moss After a couple of singles of scrappy indie pop, singer-songwriter Elanor Moss dialled back the fuzz and the tempo for her debut full-length album. The Knife, the Needle leans towards a 60s folk style, with soft, ambling guitar as her primary accompaniment. Moss most immediately brings to mind the delicate, psychedelic folk of Vashti Bunyan or, more recently, Josephine Foster. Her voice in particular shares a similarly affinity, a slight warbling that trips along her subdued compositions. This is present in the vibrato in her vocals on ‘You’re Coming Home Tonight’ and ‘The Way That It... The post Elanor Moss – The Knife, the Needle appeared first on The Quietus .

Wham! 10 Days In China: How the Political Became Personal in a Tour That Changed Pop
A new documentary from Mike Christie uses footage shot on George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley's 1985 Chinese tour to explore the transformative power of pop In April 1985, Wham! really couldn’t be any more famous – in the UK at least. In just over twelve months, they’d had two number one singles and a million-selling number two single (‘Last Christmas’) which was held off the coveted Christmas top spot by another million-seller (Band Aid) that George Michael was on anyway. Then there was a million-selling album called Make It Big, and a third number one by proxy, thanks to Michael’s first solo chart-topper ‘Careless Whisper’. They’d well and truly made it big into a rarified world where popstar spats, haircuts, new cars... Haunted By Time: Iron Maiden’s Wasted Years & Somewhere In Time Revisited
Jamie Stephenson revisits a crucial turning point 40 years ago, marking the moment when the Irons stopped simply writing songs about history and became a band haunted by time itself Released 40 years ago today, Iron Maiden’s ‘Wasted Years’ single arrived at a moment when time travel saturated popular entertainment. The Terminator (1984), Back To The Future (1985), and Doctor Who had all made temporal dislocation a familiar cultural trope. Artist Derek Riggs knowingly draws upon this visual vocabulary on the single’s sleeve and the artwork for its parent album, Somewhere In Time (released a month later). The TARDIS appears on both covers, while a DeLorean-esque vehicle hovers in the background of the 1986-7 Somewhere On Tour programme. Yet Maiden’s interests...
