007 First Light review

IO awkwardly welds together two schools of game design.

007 First Light's launch bugs and fixes prove disappointingly short on material for James Bond quips

I fired up the launch patch notes for Io Interactive's 007 First Light hoping to find some rich material for James Bond quips. You know, like when James Bond beheads a villain with a skillet, then says something like "I always suspected you wereโ€ฆ small fry." Or when James Bond murders somebody during an egg-and-spoon race, then says "You're cracking me up, my dear sir." Alas, developers Io Interactive have let me down. The game's first hotfix is a bunch of routine but important-sounding fixes for various crash bugs. For example, it fixes a crash that occurs during a cutscene where Bond and Moneypenny enter an elevator. "Elevator crash bug" โ€“ what am I supposed to do with that? Hang on, do elevators also crash??? I need to stop using those things. Read more

MSI has the world's first "triple mode" gaming monitor, offering 4K 360Hz, 1440p 520Hz and 1080p 680Hz in one model

Finally, my 4K 240Hz OLED is outdated. Yesterday we reported that Samsung Display had announced a new 32-inch 4K 360Hz QD-OLED panel, the first true successor to the 4K 240Hz QD-OLEDs that first appeared two years ago. Now, MSI has announced its OLED 322URDX36 monitor using the panel, with a unique trick: as well as offering a 4K at 360Hz mode and a 1080p 680Hz mode, it has a mid-point 1440p 520Hz setting. That makes it the world's first "triple mode" monitor, which might come in handy for anyone trying to balance spatial resolution and temporal resolution to suit a specific game. The RAMageddon hits home

The extent to which the ongoing crisis in cost and supply of digital storage โ€“ primarily meaning RAM and SSDs โ€“ is going to impact the games business can be hard to grasp. It's been the subject of headlines for months, but it can feel quite abstract. It's one thing to read about the entire world's supply chain for memory chips being rerouted into gigantic data centre projects, leaving only the thinnest of trickles for consumer devices; it's quite another thing to really internalise what that means at a consumer level. "Stay on target": Helldivers 2 gets a big performance patch with upscaler support, but it isn't working brilliantly for everybody

Helldivers 2 has a new update that aims to improve the extraction shooter's performance, a source of some woe lately among Super Earth's democracy-managers. It introduces support for upscalers โ€“ specifically, FSR 3.1.5 (with FSR 4.0.3 for certain GPUs), DLSS 4.5 and XeSS 3.0 - together with variable rate shading and dynamic resolution scaling.
