"Nobody's making games for the retired people" – The growing yet underserved market for grey gamers
Back in February, MachineGames head Jerk Gustafsson emphasised to GamesIndustry.biz that the video games market still has room to grow . "I am 54 years old now," he said, "and I grew up with games – but I think I was also the first generation that grew up with games. So when I'm going into retirement, when I'm 70 years old, that should be the peak. That should be the peak of our install base, that should be the peak of people that have actually grown up playing games on a daily basis." Read more
The Devs Behind Loco Motive Once Pitched A Red Dwarf Adventure Game, & It Looks Smeggin' Brilliant
"Mr. Flibble's very cross". Adam Riches, the co-founder of Robust Games (the developer of the excellent indie point-and-click adventure game Loco Motive ), has revealed that he once had the opportunity to pitch Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor on making a game based on the cult British TV show . Red Dwarf, if you happened to live in the UK and were a sci-fi fan in the late '80s or early '90s, was pretty much must-watch TV, skilfully combining incredible practical effects and miniature work with a charismatic leading cast, clever scripts, and memorable comedy one-liners. Originally airing in 1988, the show initially focused on the adventures of the loveable slob Lister (played by Craig Charles), who is frozen in stasis aboard a mining ship and marooned three million years into the future, waking up to a dead crew and only the ship's computer (Norman Lovett), his former roommate-turned-hologram (Chris Barrie), and a humanoid creature evolved from his pet cat (Danny John-Jules) as companions. A conspicuous absence of live-service, a wealth of single-player games, and the spectre of a £500 console: what we made of PlayStation's June State of Play
Last night's PlayStation State of Play was a big one for Sony. We're still reeling from the platform holder's announcement in March that the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Portal would be getting major price hikes thanks to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape". And there's the most recent PS Plus price hike too. What's more, there have been recent reports that Sony plans to ditch PC versions of its single-player PS5 games , and all the while the company has apparently been selling fewer and fewer of its first-party titles . "Spin the Maze, Roll the Ball!" - Taito's Quirky Puzzler 'Cameltry' Is Heading To Switch, PlayStation, & Xbox
'Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido' also announced for Console Archives. Taito's 1990 arcade maze game Cameltry has been announced as this week's Arcade Archives/Arcade Archives 2 release. Originally developed for Taito's F1 system hardware (the same hardware used for games like Dead Connection , Metal Black , Hat Trick Hero , among other titles), Cameltry sees players rotating a maze to guide a ball to the finish line waiting at the end of each level, competing against a ticking clock and obstacles from breakable bricks to bumpers. In addition to its arcade release, it later received versions for the SNES (under the name On the Ball!), Sharp X68000, and FM Towns, and was also the inspiration for the 2005 Nintendo DS title, Labyrinth (known as Mawashite Koron in Japan) and the 2009 iOS game Cameltry: The Labyrinth of Enigma .
