The soft-spoken 36-year-old was up until 3am the night before he speaks to tQ preparing projects including an upcoming live collaboration with Keiji Haino – the first artist he saw at Cafe OTO. Shanghai's underground is like a washing machine that never stops, says Jonas Klein, as he presents an in-depth report on the city's extraordinary musical infustructure, and picks out five key releases - from the former popstar re-booting the Bristol sound to a hell-bath of distorted drone Shanghai Qiutian "Another one of these, please," I tell the bartender in Chinese, pointing at their self-brewed beer. It’s also a poem that expresses a burning desire for a connection with divinity: “I long for scenes where man has never trod … there to abide with my creator, God”. Alison Cotton interpolates this poem and uses its title on track two of her latest album titled The Gods Laugh - perhaps a nod to the notion of cruel omnipotence...
